How to care for your shell garment
Regular care and washing help extend your shell garment’s life. Always follow the care label for washing and drying instructions.
Between washes
Hang up your garment and let it dry after use.
Rinse off salt and salt water with fresh water.
Air out your garment and gently spot-clean small stains.
Wash when the garment is dirty or water no longer beads on the outer fabric. Don’t wait until dirt becomes ingrained.
Prepare your garment
Read the care label.
Empty the pockets and close all zippers and hook-and-loop fastenings.
Clean the detergent drawer to remove any detergent and fabric softener residue.
Wash
Use a cleaner designed for shell garments with a membrane, such as Nikwax Tech Wash, available in our stores.
Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging and avoid overloading the machine.
Select the temperature and wash cycle specified on the care label.
Rinse thoroughly. Consider an extra rinse to remove any detergent residue.
Do not use fabric softener, as it can affect the garment’s performance.
Dry cleaning is not recommended, as it may damage the garment’s materials and alter its shape.
Dry and reactivate
Check the care label for permitted drying methods.
Preferably use a drying cabinet on low heat, provided the care label allows it. Heat helps reactivate the existing durable water-repellent (DWR) finish.
The surface finish is reactivated, not the membrane.
Test with water
Once the garment is completely dry, sprinkle a little water onto the outer fabric.
Does the water bead and roll off? No new water-repellent treatment is needed.
Does the water soak in and darken the fabric? If you have already washed the garment and reactivated the finish, it may be time to reapply a water-repellent treatment.
Reapply water repellency when needed
Always apply water-repellent treatments to a clean garment.
We recommend Nikwax, available in our stores. Choose a product suited to the garment’s materials and construction.
For garments suitable for wash-in treatments, use Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In as a separate treatment after washing. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
For garments with moisture-wicking linings, use a suitable spray-on treatment on the outside to preserve the lining’s performance.
Follow both the treatment product’s drying instructions and the garment’s care label. Nikwax TX.Direct does not require heat to provide water repellency.
Allow the garment to dry completely, then repeat the water test.
