A year of triumphs for Swedish elite sailing

As a proud official clothing sponsor of the Swedish Sailing Federation and SWE Sailing Team, we've had the pleasure of celebrating success after success throughout 2023. The coming year holds the promise of even greater achievements.

"2023 that is soon coming to a close was more than satisfactory. We have probably never been stronger. We can take pride in having the best female sailors in the world, when it comes to those sailing boats," says national team coach Magnus Grävare.

The initial part of 2024 is anticipated to be intense with European Championships and World Championships in all Olympic classes. Between July 26th – August 11th, it's time for the Olympics in Paris where Sweden boasts four strong changes for sailing medals.

Sweden aims for medals in four classes: 49erFX, where the world champions Vilma Bobeck/Rebecca Netzler are the favorites; 470 Mixed, where Anton Dahlberg/Lovisa Karlsson, reigning European champions, and Anton, already an Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo 2020 (with Fredrik Bergström), are strong contenders; and ILCA, where Josefin Olsson, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist, is eyeing another podium finish.

The year of 2023 was a good year for Swedish sailing at major championships. In May, Anton and Lovisa secured their second consecutive European Championship gold in the new Olympic class 470 Mixed, in a thrilling final off San Remo, Italy.

"This victory means incredibly much to us. Despite not sailing brilliantly, we managed to hold it together and secure the win day after day," Anton expressed after their victory.

Despite Vilma injuring her knee in the second last race, resulting the team not being able to sail the final, Vilma Bobeck/Rebecca Netzler had a strong competition in 49erFX and brought home a bronze medal.

Two months later, a combined World Championship in The Hague showcased Vilma and Rebecca's dominance in their class. They had an outstanding championship, leading from day one. Even before the last medal race, they were able to celebrate the World Championship title and gold medal due to their significant lead that no one could surpass.

This outstanding victory led to Vilma and Rebecca being nominated by World Sailing in early November, as one of three crews, for the world's best female crew in 2023 (World Sailor of the Year). While they didn't win the award, the nomination itself is a significant recognition and an honor unprecedented for any other Swedes.

Simultaneously, while Vilma and Rebecca shone in 49erFX in The Hague, Emil Järudd/Hanna Jonsson secured a World Championship bronze in Nacra. In the final race, they staged an incredible comeback after a start mistake, finishing second and securing the bronze medal.

"It was incredibly fun, and we are super proud of what we have achieved together. We had to take a penalty before the start, a 360-degree turn, so it was a tough start," shared Hanna.

At the end of November, the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) announced 34 Swedish elite athletes qualified for the Paris Olympics. Among them were five sailors: Vilma Bobeck/Rebecca Netzler (49erFX), Anton Dahlberg/Lovisa Karlsson (470), and Josefin Olsson (ILCA). While Sweden has an Olympic spot secured in Nacra 17, the crew selection will be determined in the spring.

"It feels significant that the first sailors have been selected for the Olympics. The trust bestowed by SOK for five sailors already indicates our commendable efforts thus far," said Magnus Grävare, looking forward to the pursuit of more Swedish Olympic spots.

Pelle P and the Swedish Sailing Federation continue their partnership into 2024, looking forward to an exciting international sailing year with numerous World Cup events.
